The Origin of Socks

Ancient socks were called "foot clothes" or "foot bags", which evolved over thousands of years to develop into modern forms of socks. The women of ancient Rome wore thin straps around their feet and legs, which were the most primitive type of socks. Until the middle of the Middle Ages, this type of "sock" also began to be popular in Europe, but cloth strips were used instead of thin straps. In the 16th century, the Spanish began to separate pantyhose from pants and began to use weaving methods to weave socks.
British man William Lee engaged in manual weaving for his wife, which sparked his research on knitting machinery. In 1589, he invented the world's first manual knitting machine for weaving woolen pants. In 1598, it was restructured into a knitting machine that could produce finer stockings.
Shortly thereafter, the Frenchman Fournier began producing stockings in Lyon. It was not until the mid-19th century that cotton socks began to be produced. After the invention of nylon by DuPont in 1938, the first batch of nylon socks was launched on the market in the same year, and the sock market underwent a complete transformation. Nylon stockings were highly favored by people and became popular for a while. The popularity in Europe was relatively late, and it was not until 1945 that the first batch of nylon stockings were officially launched. According to research, the most primitive socks appeared during the Xia Dynasty (21st to 17th century BC) in China. In the book 'Wen Zi', there is a phrase 'King Wen's attack on Chong and the sock system being untied', which refers to the loose straps of King Wen's sock system in Zhou. From the two pairs of silk stockings unearthed from the No.1 Western Han Tomb in Mawangdui, Changsha, it can be seen that they are both made of whole silk and sewn seamlessly on the foot and back. The back of the sock tube opens with a garter strap attached to the opening. The size of the socks is 23cm and 23.4cm, and the height of the socks is 21cm and 22.5cm.
Before the socks people wore, people had been wearing leggings in a broad sense. This can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where leather leggings and sock like outfits were sewn with hemp or woolen fabrics. During the Crusader period, the socks Chausses Shaws appeared, but they were not prepared for women. The Crusader pure silk fabric was made into more exquisite socks. The ladies adorned their ankles with exquisite and small shoes, flickering under their beautiful dresses. At that time, socks were the patent of men. In 1589, William Lee, a student at the British Theological Seminary, invented a machine for manually sewing socks, which was six times faster than hand sewing and was the ancestor of sewing machines. At the same time, women also began to wear socks.
The industrial production of socks began in 1860, and the sock industry has been searching for new materials to replace rare and expensive silk. The emergence of blended yarn has led to great success in the sock industry. In 1928, DuPont Company showcased its first pair of nylon socks, while Bayer Company launched polypropylene socks. In 1940, tall nylon socks set a record for the highest sales in history in the United States and began to become a common commodity. Boat socks appeared in the early 1980s, when tennis attire began to rise. The classic style had two plush balls at the ankle, which became popular again in the mid-2000s. However, many styles have evolved, mainly used to match skateboarding, followed by shorts or short skirts. Some girls are wearing socks that protrude and look unattractive because they need to fully showcase their leg curves
